The new F1 season is just around the corner and seeing footage of our Own The Chequered Flag being waved in the trailer for the latest series of Drive to Survive on Netflix has got us feeling nostalgic!
The 2024 Formula 1 season was a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with unexpected twists, new rivalries brewing, and historic achievements. Below, we look at the most exciting moments from the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship and consider what we might see this year as F1 turns 75.
Pre-Season Shock: Lewis Hamilton Signs with Ferrari
The motorsport world was shocked when news hit that seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, had signed for Ferrari commencing from the start of the 2025 season. This bold move sparked debates amongst excited fans and analysts alike, eager to see how Hamilton would fare in the Prancing Horse.
This also created a frenzy of people who wanted to know what this would mean for all the other driver line-ups on the grid. Where would Carlos Sainz go? Will Mercedes recover from such a huge departure?
Although we now know some of the answers, this news rocked the F1 world and started the 2024 season on an extremely exciting foot.

Season Kick-Off: Red Bull’s Early Dominance
The season opened in similar fashion to the previous years, with Red Bull Racing showing their hand early with a 1-2 finish in Bahrain. The early Red-Bull dominance continued through the first five races of the season, with Max Verstappen winning all but one of the Grands Prix.
This early dominance set the Red Bull team in good stead for the rest of the season, as they aimed to clinch their third consecutive Constructors’ Championship.

Leclerc’s Monaco Mastery
As the season progressed, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes began bringing upgrades to their car which brought all the teams much closer together.
Charles Leclerc made history at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix when he became the first Monégasque driver since Louis Chiron in 1931 to achieve the win in his home race. Leclerc impressed across the weekend, claiming pole position on the Saturday in front of Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz.
This victory ended Leclerc’s winless run with his last win coming at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix. Additionally, this was the first time a Ferrari driver had won the Monaco Grand Prix since Sebastian Vettel in 2017.

Hamilton’s Silverstone Sensation
Leclerc’s incredible home Grand Prix win was not the only fairytale story to come out of the 2024 season. At the 2024 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton set himself up for a shot at glory when he qualified behind his teammate in second position.
Due to the unpredictable weather during the race, teams were forced to change their strategy as the race was unfolding. This played into the hands of Lewis Hamilton with the Mercedes team choosing to pit the Brit on lap 39 and change to softs.
Hamilton went on to hold off Max Verstappen to win his first Grand Prix since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Alpine's Double Podium in Brazil
In a rain-affected São Paulo Grand Prix, Alpine achieved a remarkable double podium finish.
Esteban Ocon secured second place, closely followed by teammate Pierre Gasly in third. This unexpected result propelled Alpine from ninth to sixth in the Constructors' Championship, marking their first double podium since 2013.

Championship Climax: Verstappen's Fourth Title
As the season progressed, the battle for the Drivers' Championship intensified with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris going toe-to-toe for the title.
The 2024 World Drivers’ Champion was crowned at the Las Vegas Grand Prix when Max Verstappen finished ahead of the British driver. This result meant that Verstappen had joined the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton as drivers’ who have won four consecutive World Championships.

Constructors' Championship: McLaren's Triumph
The Constructors’ Championship went all the way to the final race of the season with both Ferrari and McLaren fighting for the top spot.
The season concluded with McLaren securing their ninth Constructors' Championship title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This marked their first championship since 1998, highlighting a remarkable turnaround for the historic team.
